
SAVE OUR SEINE RIVER ENVIRONMENT INC. (SOS) is a community-based environmental organization and registered charity. Our vision is for a sustainable and protected Seine River Greenway that provides a healthy habitat for vegetation and wildlife and contributes to the quality of life of all residents and visitors.
SOS is seeking Summer River Keepers for its 30+year Summer Team Program.
Position Overview As an outdoor position, Summer River Keepers work as a team under the supervision of a coordinator and program manager, to carry out various urban restoration and enhancement (URE) work of SOS including clean up of the Seine River and surrounding area, plantings of native plants and trees and their maintenance, removal of noxious plants, and other URE related work. Specifics Job Duties
Work outdoors, often in wet, and muddy conditions, while doing physical work outdoors (including in poor weather)
Remove garbage, trash, and woody debris from the Seine River and other local water areas such as suburban retention ponds, often from a canoe
Clean and maintain walking trails, riverbanks, natural spaces, and habitat projects (weeding, watering, litter removal)
Maintain SOS habitat restoration projects (including Niakwa Trail Rain Garden, The Triangle, The Meadow, etc.)
Remove invasive plants along the riverbanks (buckthorn, burdock, thistle, etc.)
Assist with inventories of natural features and monitoring (photography, field notes, GPS, water testing)
Assist with tree and native plant plantings and maintenance
Collect GIS/GPS data using supplied equipment
Other URE related duties as assigned.
Specifics Job Requirements & Eligibility
Attend safety training and use personal protective equipment as required (training and equipment provided)
Adhere to all safety policy/procedures (Provincial Workplace Safety and Health Act, Manitoba Safe Work, SOS Employee policies)
Valid Province of Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License
Candidates must be aged 15 to 29 (valid Child Employment Permits if 15-17 years of age), living in Manitoba and legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid Social Insurance Number).
Job Details
Supervision: work under the direction of the Summer Team Coordinator for assignment of tasks and the Outreach Program Administrative Manager for other matters.
Position: 3-4 full-time seasonal positions, each up to 40 hours per week, for a maximum of 480 hours per position (approx June 1, 2025 – August 31, 2025)
Time Frame (Approximate): 10-12 consecutive weeks between May 31 and August 31, 2025, (dependent on funding)
Wage Range: $15.80-$18.00/hour (subject to funding availability), 1-2 team leaders will be compensated at a higher pay rate.
Work Location: The urban Seine River and surrounding Greenway, extending from the Winnipeg floodway to the Red River
Required Skills
Passion for nature, the outdoors, and/or the Seine River
Ability to work outdoors; high tolerance for insects, dirt, mud, and working in water
Physical ability to perform the duties of the job
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small, energetic, hard-working team
Good communication skills
Desired Skills
Previous paddling experience, outdoor work experience
Strong comfort level wading into waist deep water, working in and around water environments
Willingness to learn about the Seine River, its natural and cultural history and share knowledge with the public
Interest in a career in the natural sciences, biology, physical geography, interpretation, or a related field
First Aid training, Paddle/Boat safety training, Comfortability in a water environment
